Augusta Ada King, Countess of Lovelace (1815-1852), was a mathematician and writer educated in logic, languages, and mathematics under tutors including Augustus De Morgan. Her collaboration with Charles Babbage turned her into the most perceptive early interpreter of the Analytical Engine. Her 1843 notes on Luigi Menabrea's description of Babbage's machine became a foundational document for computing.
Ada Lovelace's Notes on Menabrea's Sketch of the Analytical Engine begin as an act of translation and become a theory of computation. Luigi Menabrea had published a French account of Charles Babbage's proposed Analytical Engine after hearing Babbage lecture in Turin.
