About Eugen Bleuler

Eugen Bleuler (1857-1939) was a Swiss psychiatrist at the Burgholzli clinic who introduced the term schizophrenia and revised Kraepelin's dementia praecox concept. His work emphasized associative disturbance, affect, ambivalence, and autism in a technical psychiatric sense. He influenced Jung, psychoanalysis, and twentieth-century schizophrenia research.

Dementia Praecox or the Group of Schizophrenias

1911 (English trans. 1950) · Early 20th Century · History

Bleuler's Dementia Praecox or the Group of Schizophrenias reworks Kraepelin's deteriorating psychosis into a broader and more psychologically complex group of disorders. Its most famous act is terminological: Bleuler introduces schizophrenia to name a splitting or disjunction in psychic functions, not a split personality in the popular sense.
