About Louis Pasteur and Joseph Lister

Louis Pasteur (1822–1895), born at Dole in the Jura, was a French chemist who began with studies of crystal asymmetry, held posts at Strasbourg, Lille and the École Normale Supérieure in Paris, and went on to show that fermentation and putrefaction are the work of living micro-organisms; he later studied silkworm disease, anthrax, chicken cholera and rabies, and the Pasteur Institute opened in Paris in 1888. Joseph Lister (1827–1912), born at Upton in Essex to a Quaker family, studied at University College London, became professor of surgery at Glasgow in 1860, and from 1865 applied Pasteur's findings to wounds, developing antiseptic surgery with carbolic acid. He later held chairs at Edinburgh and King's College London, was made a baronet in 1883 and raised to the peerage as Baron Lister in 1897.
