About Marcel Proust

Marcel Proust (1871–1922) was born in Auteuil, then on the edge of Paris, the son of Adrien Proust, a distinguished physician and professor of hygiene, and Jeanne Weil. Asthmatic from the age of nine, he moved in Parisian salons as a young man, translated John Ruskin, and published essays and sketches before devoting his last years, largely confined to a cork-lined bedroom, to the seven-volume novel In Search of Lost Time. The second volume won the Prix Goncourt in 1919; the last three appeared after his death in 1922.
