About Pierre Janet

Pierre Janet (1859-1947) was a French psychologist, physician, and philosopher whose work on hysteria, dissociation, traumatic memory, and psychological automatism helped shape dynamic psychiatry. He studied under Charcot and taught at the College de France. His clinical vocabulary influenced later trauma theory as well as debates with psychoanalysis.

The Major Symptoms of Hysteria

1907 · Early 20th Century · History

The Major Symptoms of Hysteria gathers Janet's Harvard lectures into a clear account of dissociation, narrowed consciousness, fixed ideas, amnesia, anesthesia, motor symptoms, crises, and suggestibility. Janet stands close to Charcot but less theatrical; he is interested in how psychological functions fall apart, become dissociated, or continue automatically outside ordinary awareness.
