About Richard and Florence Atwater

Richard Atwater (1892–1948) taught Greek at the University of Chicago and wrote a humor column for Chicago newspapers; Florence Hasseltine Carroll Atwater (1896–1979), his wife, was a teacher and writer. Richard drafted the penguin story after seeing a film of Admiral Richard E. Byrd's Antarctic expedition, but a stroke in 1934 left him unable to write. Florence, who supported the family by teaching and writing for magazines, revised the manuscript and saw it published by Little, Brown in 1938.
