William Faulkner (1897-1962) was an American novelist and short-story writer whose fictional Yoknapatawpha County made local Mississippi history into a dense modernist world. A Nobel laureate, he wrote about slavery's afterlife, family decay, violence, memory, race and language. Malcolm Cowley's 1946 Portable Faulkner helped revive and organize his reputation for a wider readership.

The Portable Faulkner is not a single work in the usual sense but an edited map of Faulkner's Yoknapatawpha fiction. Malcolm Cowley arranged stories, novel excerpts, genealogical material and commentary so that readers could see Faulkner's invented county as one continuous historical field.
