About Jack Schaefer
Jack Warner Schaefer (1907-1991) was born in Cleveland, Ohio, studied at Oberlin College and Columbia University, and spent more than twenty years as a newspaperman, with United Press, the New Haven Journal-Courier, the Baltimore Sun and the Norfolk Virginian-Pilot. He began writing fiction in 1945, and had not yet travelled to the West when he wrote Shane. He later settled in New Mexico and wrote Monte Walsh and the Newbery Honor book Old Ramon (1960).
Shane is a short Western novel in sixteen chapters, told years afterward by Bob Starrett, who was about eleven in the summer of 1889 when a stranger rode into his family's Wyoming valley. The rider, dressed in dark, fine clothes and calling himself only Shane, stops at the homestead of Joe Starrett, Bob's father, and Joe's wife, Marian.
