About Jean-Martin Charcot

Jean-Martin Charcot (1825-1893) was a French neurologist at the Salpetriere and a founder of modern clinical neurology. His demonstrations on multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, hysteria, hypnosis, and localization shaped European medicine. Freud studied with him in Paris, and Charcot's clinic became a major bridge between neurology and dynamic psychiatry.

Lectures on the Diseases of the Nervous System

1872-1887 (English lectures 1877-1881) · 19th Century · History

Charcot's lectures show clinical neurology becoming a public method: observe signs, localize lesions, correlate symptoms with anatomy, and teach by cases. The English volumes gather Salpetriere lectures on spinal cord disease, paralysis, tremor, sclerosis, locomotor ataxia, hysteria, epilepsy, and related nervous disorders.
