About Luigi Pirandello

Luigi Pirandello (1867-1936) was an Italian dramatist, novelist and short-story writer born near Girgenti (now Agrigento) in Sicily. He studied in Palermo, Rome and Bonn, where he took a doctorate on the dialect of his home town, and for many years taught at a teacher-training college for women in Rome. His novel The Late Mattia Pascal (1904) made his name; after 1915 he turned chiefly to the theatre, writing plays that question the stability of identity and the line between appearance and reality. He founded his own theatre company in Rome in 1925 and received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1934.
