Paul Auster (1947-2024) was an American novelist, memoirist, poet, translator and screenwriter associated with postmodern fiction and the literary reinvention of noir. Raised in New Jersey and long based in Brooklyn, he wrote works that turn chance, identity, authorship and urban solitude into narrative engines. The New York Trilogy made his international reputation.
The New York Trilogy gathers three linked short novels: City of Glass, Ghosts and The Locked Room. Each begins from the materials of detective fiction and then dissolves the detective plot into questions of identity, authorship, language and mental disintegration.
