1745-1826 · French physician associated with the moral treatment of the mentally ill
About Philippe Pinel
Philippe Pinel (1745-1826) was a French physician associated with Bicetre and the Salpetriere, where his reforms became emblematic of moral treatment. He helped move European asylum medicine away from custodial brutality toward clinical observation, classification, and humane management. His Traite medico-philosophique sur l alienation mentale shaped nineteenth-century psychiatric nosology, even where later clinicians rejected his categories.
“I was not a little surprized to find many maniacs who at no period gave evidence of any lesion of the understanding, but who were under the dominion of instinctive and ab- stract fury”
Pinel presents insanity as a medical and moral problem rather than a condition to be met chiefly with chains, spectacle, or punishment. The treatise moves between nosology, institutional observation, and therapeutic counsel.
