About Stella Gibbons
Stella Gibbons (1902–1989) was an English novelist, poet and journalist from London. She worked for the Evening Standard and The Lady before her first novel, Cold Comfort Farm (1932), won the Femina–Vie Heureuse Prize and made her famous. She wrote more than twenty further novels, including the sequel Christmas at Cold Comfort Farm (stories) and Conference at Cold Comfort Farm, but none matched the success of her debut.
Cold Comfort Farm is a comic novel parodying the overwrought rural fiction of the early twentieth century, the 'loam and lovechild' school associated with writers such as Mary Webb and D. H. Lawrence. It is set in a slightly futuristic England of video-phones and air taxis.
