About Thomas S. Kuhn

Thomas Samuel Kuhn (1922–1996) was an American historian and philosopher of science, born in Cincinnati, who took his doctorate in physics at Harvard in 1949. Teaching in James B. Conant's general-education science courses turned him toward the history of science, and he published The Copernican Revolution in 1957. He taught at Harvard, the University of California at Berkeley, Princeton and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and later wrote on black-body theory and on the theory of scientific change.

The Structure of Scientific Revolutions

1962 · Postwar Contemporary · Philosophy

Thomas Kuhn's essay argues that the sciences do not grow by steady accumulation of facts but pass through long periods of settled work broken by revolutions in which the framework of a field is replaced. It was first published in 1962 by the University of Chicago Press as a monograph in the International Encyclopedia of Unified Science, and a second edition of 1970 added a Postscript answering critics.
