Warren McCulloch and Walter Pitts
American neurophysiologist and logician who together proposed an early mathematical model of neurons
About Warren McCulloch and Walter Pitts
Warren McCulloch (1898-1969) was an American neurophysiologist and psychiatrist whose work joined brain science, logic, and cybernetics. Walter Pitts (1923-1969) was a self-taught logician and mathematician associated with the University of Chicago and later MIT. Their 1943 collaboration became a founding text for neural networks, automata theory, and computational models of mind.

A Logical Calculus of the Ideas Immanent in Nervous Activity is a short paper with a long afterlife. McCulloch and Pitts propose an idealized model of neurons that fire or do not fire according to logical relations among their inputs.
