Quotation from Leviathan by Thomas Hobbes
“Which Venime I will not doubt to compare to the biting of a mad Dogge, which is a disease the Physicians call Hydrophobia, or Fear Of Water”
Leviathan, Part II, Ch. XXIX (1651 text (original spelling))
Hobbes likens the influence of Greek and Roman republican writers on monarchies to rabies, coining 'Tyrannophobia' for the resulting fear of strong government.
