Quotation from Lex, Rex by Samuel Rutherford
“The King, as King, is a living, breathing, and speaking Law.”
Lex, Rex, Question XXII (1644 first edition, EEBO-TCP transcription (original spelling))
Rutherford accepts the politicians' maxim Rex est lex viva and turns it to his purpose: the king is the law put into practice, so his power is bound by the law.
