Quotation from Lex, Rex by Samuel Rutherford
“Resistance is in the Children of God an innocent act of self-preservation, as is patient suffering, and therefore they may well subsist in one.”
Lex, Rex, Question XXX (1644 first edition, EEBO-TCP transcription (original spelling))
Answering the royalist claim that Christians may only suffer, Rutherford holds that lawful defence and patience are both acts of grace that can belong to the same believer.
