Quotation from Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf
“Septimus was one of the first to volunteer. He went to France to save an England which consisted almost entirely of Shakespeare’s plays and Miss Isabel Pole in a green dress walking in a square.”
Mrs. Dalloway, Midday, Septimus's history (Project Gutenberg #71865 (Harcourt, Brace text))
The narrator tells how the young clerk who loved poetry went to war, with gentle irony at the England he imagined he was defending.
