Quotation from Statesman by Plato

“But the law is always striving to make one;--like an obstinate and ignorant tyrant, who will not allow anything to be done contrary to his appointment, or any question to be asked”

Plato (spoken by Eleatic Stranger)

Statesman, Science and law (294c), trans. Benjamin Jowett (1892)

The law tries to make one simple rule for endlessly varied human affairs, and so cannot adjust to circumstances as a wise ruler would.
