Quotation from Summa Theologica by Thomas Aquinas
“thus of all animals he has the least sense of smell. For man needs the largest brain as compared to the body”
Summa Theologica, I, Q. 91, Art. 3, Reply Obj. 1, trans. Fathers of the English Dominican Province (1911-1920)
Aquinas explains the human body's design: a large, moist brain serves the interior powers needed for thought and cools the heart, at the cost of smell.
