Quotation from Summa Theologica by Thomas Aquinas
“If, however, the evaporation be somewhat less, phantasms appear, but distorted and without sequence; thus it happens in a case of fever”
Summa Theologica, I, Q. 84, Art. 8, Reply Obj. 2, trans. Fathers of the English Dominican Province (1911-1920)

In a physiological account of sleep drawn from Aristotle, Aquinas grades dreams by the amount of vapour rising to the head, from dreamless sleep after heavy eating to the confused images of fever.
