Quotation from Summa Theologica by Thomas Aquinas
“so that sometimes while asleep a man may judge that what he sees is a dream, discerning, as it were, between things, and their images”
Summa Theologica, I, Q. 84, Art. 8, Reply Obj. 2, trans. Fathers of the English Dominican Province (1911-1920)

Aquinas describes what is now called lucid dreaming, when the common sense is partly freed toward the end of sleep.
