Quotation from Religion and the Rise of Capitalism by R. H. Tawney
“In every human soul there is a socialist and an individualist, an authoritarian and a fanatic for liberty, as in each there is a Catholic and a Protestant.”
Religion and the Rise of Capitalism, Ch. IV, The Puritan Movement, sec. 2, A Godly Discipline versus the Religion of Trade (Project Gutenberg #71223 (Harcourt, Brace, 1926))
Having noted Weber's thesis, Tawney argues that Puritanism held conservative and revolutionary, collectivist and individualist elements together.
