Quotation from The Persian Expedition by Xenophon
“A small dose produced a condition not unlike violent drunkenness, a large one an attack very like a fit of madness, and some dropped down, apparently at death's door”
The Persian Expedition, Book IV, Chapter VIII, trans. H. G. Dakyns (1890s)
The soldiers eat honey near Trapezus and are struck down; Dakyns's note cites Grote linking it to Pontic azalea (rhododendron) nectar.
