Quotation from Thus Spoke Zarathustra by Friedrich Nietzsche
“Could it be possible! This old saint in the forest hath not yet heard of it, that GOD IS DEAD”
Thus Spoke Zarathustra, Prologue, §2, trans. Thomas Common (1892)
After parting from the hermit, Zarathustra speaks to his own heart; the book's first statement of the death of God is a private aside, not a sermon.
