About Bernard of Clairvaux
Bernard of Clairvaux (1090-1153) was a Cistercian abbot, preacher, theologian, and reformer whose influence reached across medieval Europe. He founded and led the abbey of Clairvaux, advised popes and rulers, opposed Abelard, and preached the Second Crusade. His sermons combine monastic discipline, affective theology, and lyrical biblical interpretation.
Bernard's Sermons on the Song of Songs are among the central monuments of medieval monastic spirituality. They do not offer a continuous modern commentary on every verse.
