About Edmond Rostand
Edmond Rostand (1868-1918) was a French poet and dramatist from Marseille. Cyrano de Bergerac, written for the actor Constant Coquelin, made him famous overnight in 1897; his later plays include L'Aiglon (1900) and Chantecler (1910).
Cyrano de Bergerac is Edmond Rostand's five-act verse play about a seventeenth-century Gascon soldier, poet and swordsman whose enormous nose convinces him that no woman could love him. Act I opens in 1640 at the Hôtel de Bourgogne theatre in Paris.
