About Henry James

Henry James (1843–1916) was an American-born novelist who settled in England in 1876 and became a British subject in 1915. Brother of the psychologist William James, he made the encounter of innocent Americans with old Europe his signature subject in works such as Daisy Miller, The Portrait of a Lady and The Ambassadors. His later style, dense and psychologically subtle, made him a key precursor of literary modernism; he was also a major writer of ghost stories and criticism.
