Jacobus de Voragine; Francesco Diedo tradition; later plague devotion
Medieval hagiographers and devotional traditions surrounding the plague saints Roch and Sebastian
About Jacobus de Voragine; Francesco Diedo tradition; later plague devotion
Jacobus de Voragine supplied the medieval West with a portable storehouse of saints' lives in the Golden Legend. Francesco Diedo, a fifteenth-century Venetian official associated with Brescia, helped stabilize the late medieval Vita of St. Roch. Together with artists, confraternities, hospitals, and plague cities, these traditions made Sebastian and Roch two of Europe's most recognizable epidemic saints.
