George Whitefield (1714-1770) was an English Anglican evangelist whose itinerant preaching helped drive the First Great Awakening in Britain and North America. Trained at Oxford and associated with the early Methodists, he became famous for open-air preaching and dramatic delivery. His public career also included a defense of enslaved labor in Georgia.
Whitefield's Selected Sermons preserve the voice of the eighteenth century's most famous evangelical itinerant. His preaching emphasized new birth, heartfelt conversion, human sin, Christ's mercy, and the immediate demand that hearers respond.
