Hugh Latimer (c. 1487-1555) was an English reforming preacher and bishop whose plain, forceful sermons made him one of the best-known voices of the English Reformation. He preached before Edward VI and attacked clerical corruption, covetous landlords, and bishops who neglected to preach. Under Mary I he was burned at Oxford with Nicholas Ridley.
Latimer's Selected Sermons bring the English Reformation into a rough, vivid, public idiom. Unlike a systematic theologian, Latimer often sounds like a moral witness standing before court and commons at once.
