Quotation from O Captain! My Captain! by Walt Whitman
“O Captain! my Captain! our fearful trip is done, The ship has weather’d every rack, the prize we sought is won,”
O Captain! My Captain!, Stanza 1, lines 1-2 (Leaves of Grass, deathbed edition (1891-92))
The opening establishes the extended metaphor: the ship of state has survived the storm of war and won the Union.
