Quotation from Rerum Novarum by Pope Leo XIII
“Man precedes the State, and possesses, prior to the formation of any State, the right of providing for the sustenance of his body.”
Rerum Novarum, Against the socialist remedy, trans. Anonymous (Benziger, 1903)
Leo argues that the right to provide for oneself from the earth does not depend on the State's grant.
