Quotation from Rerum Novarum by Pope Leo XIII
“Those who work in mines and quarries, and extract coal, stone, and metals from the bowels of the earth, should have shorter hours in proportion as their labor is more severe and trying to health.”
Rerum Novarum, The duties of the State, on hours of labor, trans. Anonymous (Benziger, 1903)
Part of Leo's argument that working hours must be fitted to the strength of the worker and the nature of the work.
