Abraham Kuyper (1837–1920) was a Dutch theologian, pastor, journalist and statesman, born at Maassluis and educated at the University of Leiden. After pastorates at Beesd, Utrecht and Amsterdam, he founded the daily newspaper De Standaard (1872), led the Anti-Revolutionary Party, the first organized national party in the Netherlands, and founded the Free University of Amsterdam in 1880. He led a secession from the national Reformed Church in 1886 that joined with earlier seceders in 1892 to form the Reformed Churches in the Netherlands. He served as Prime Minister of the Netherlands from 1901 to 1905.
Lectures on Calvinism are the six Stone Lectures that the Dutch theologian and politician Abraham Kuyper delivered at Princeton Theological Seminary in October 1898, during a visit to the United States. Kuyper's aim was to present Calvinism not as a narrow church party or a set of doctrines about predestination but as a complete life-system, a view of the world able to shape every area of human life, comparable in scope to paganism, Islam, Roman Catholicism and the modernism that he saw spreading from the French Revolution of 1789.
