1844-1912 · Scottish man of letters and folklorist, editor of the colored Fairy Books
About Andrew Lang (ed.)
Andrew Lang (1844-1912) was a Scottish man of letters, born in Selkirk and educated at St Andrews and Balliol College, Oxford, who wrote poetry, history, criticism and studies of myth and folklore. He is best remembered for the twelve coloured Fairy Books (1889-1910), beginning with The Blue Fairy Book, which he edited while his wife Leonora Blanche Lang and other collaborators did much of the translating and retelling. The Arabian Nights Entertainments (1898) was a companion volume in the same format, illustrated by H. J. Ford.
The Arabian Nights Entertainments is Andrew Lang's 1898 selection of the Thousand and One Nights for children, retold in English from Antoine Galland's early eighteenth-century French version. The frame story comes first.
