About Eleanor H. Porter
Eleanor Hodgman Porter (1868-1920) was born in Littleton, New Hampshire, trained as a singer, and turned to writing short stories and novels after her marriage. Pollyanna (1913) made her one of the best-selling American authors of her day; she followed it with Pollyanna Grows Up (1915), Just David (1916) and other novels.
Pollyanna Whittier, eleven years old, is the orphaned daughter of a poor missionary minister in the American West. Her mother, Jennie, had long ago disappointed her proud New England family by marrying the young minister instead of a wealthy suitor.
